Introduction to Dentistry Courses

The processes involved in the treatment and prevention of disorders and diseases that the oral cavity is affected by is known as Dentistry. The person who completes the Dentistry Courses and practices is known as a dentist. Today dentistry has extended from the medical to the cosmetic field too as a lot of people consults dentists who have specialized in the cosmetic surgery to improve the looks or restore of the look of the face if disfigured due to an accident. Some of the common dental treatment include the filling of cavities, restoration of the broken or disfigured tooth, treatment or prevention of tooth decay and its treatment, extraction of tooth and root canal treatment. Different Types of Dentistry Courses

Today a huge population of students opt for dentistry as there is a great demand for dentists. Basically the Dentistry Courses consist of the Bachelor in Dental Science (BDS) and the Master’s in Dental Science (MDS). Almost all the medical schools and universities have a division for Dental Science or a separate college conducting Dentistry Courses. The colleges function under the purview of the Dental Council and is the governing body of all the colleges and universities for the study of Dental Science.

Eligibility for Dentistry Courses

The entry level Dentistry Courses are the Bachelor’s Degree or the BDS. The Bachelor’s in Dental Science is a 5 year course of which the final year is that of internship which is mandatory for all students to graduate. The students need to have cleared the entrance examination conducted at the All India Level. The eligibility critical for the entrance examination is that they should have passed the 10+2 / Higher Secondary level examination with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as their subjects. Mathematics and English are compulsory subjects too but not a criteria for admission to the Dentistry Courses. The domiciliary status is also considered for students who seek admission to the Dentistry Courses in the State run Dental Colleges. Eligibility for MDS is based on the successful completion of the BDS program.

How to apply for Dentistry Courses

Application for Dentistry Courses can be made on prescribed forms available to the students either through banks or through the dental colleges. They can also apply for entrance and then proceed to apply to the colleges for BDS and sometimes the same colleges conduct the MDS program where there students can apply. They can also apply for MDS program in other colleges if they have completed the BDS successfully.

Scope/ Pay scale for Dentistry Courses

Today on completion of the Dentistry Courses, the doctors and surgeons have a really attractive job prospects ahead of them. They can start their own dental clinics, work in reputed hospitals where they are offered a lucrative pay scale, and they can also take up work as tutors in dental colleges. Today if they have an additional certification or a diploma in any of the latest cosmetic surgery procedures they can even work or practice as a cosmetic surgeon in which case the earning is unlimited.
