IIT Colleges in India


The Indian Institutes of Technology more popularly referred to as the IITs are India’s most prestigious institutions for Engineering, technology and management studies. Governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, there are sixteen IIT Colleges in India located in various parts of the country. The administration of all the 16 IIT Colleges in India is under the aegis of the IIT Council but each of the IIT Colleges in India is autonomous bodies and it is the Council that links all of them. The Indian Institute of Technology was founded in May 1950 and the first to be founded was the IIT Kharagpur. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India addressed the first convocation in the year 1956 in IIT Kharagpur.

Degrees Awarded:

All the IIT Colleges in India award degrees that begin from the B.Tech to the Doctoral and Research degrees like the PhD. Admission to the IITs are on the basis of the Joint Entrance Examination that is conducted by the IIT Colleges in India together. The entrance examination is for the undergraduate courses. The Admission to the Postgraduate Courses are on the basis of the outcome of the GATE results or the Graduate Aptitude Tests in Engineering. The Joint Admission Test, The Common Entrance Examination for Design and the other Common Entrance Examination are conducted for those seeking enrolment into all the other programs like the specialized courses in various areas of study in Engineering and Science in the IIT Colleges in India

Students aiming for admission to research programs like the Fellowship in Doctoral Program need to attend a personal interview and an internal test.

Details for IIT Admission:

The students having passed the 10+2 examination India are eligible for the Joint Entrance Examination for IIT Colleges in India. A 60% + aggregate marks and a high rank in the JEE are required to be eligible for study at the IIT Colleges in India. The entrance examinations for admission to the IIT Colleges in India are usually held sometime in November every year. There is no other form of admission to the IIT Colleges in India except by the JEE procedure.
