Colleges in India


India is today one of leading destinations for higher education. The country abounds in colleges and educational institutions of different types. Colleges in India are basically differentiated on its affiliations, its funding, courses and disciplines offered and finally on the basis of other criteria like some of the Colleges in India are for women only. Most Colleges in India are affiliated to the Universities of either the Centre or the State. Some Colleges in India are Deemed Universities. Some of the Colleges in India are Institutes of National Importance and offer high quality professional courses of study.

Types of Colleges in India

The Colleges in India are differentiated as follows:

General Colleges: These are colleges in which general courses of study are offered. Usually the disciplines offered include subjects related to Humanities, Science and Commerce, but nowadays Colleges in India extend to subjects like Library Science, Bio –Technology, Home Science, Business, Finance, Hospitality, Computer Studies and similar disciplines. The courses range from Certificate and Diploma courses to undergraduate and postgraduate and some Colleges in India offer research programs.

Professional Colleges: These are colleges that offer professional courses of study in disciplines related to the professions that can be taken up by the student on completion of the course. The most popular of these professional courses include those related to Engineering, Medicine, Agriculture and Management. Nowadays the Government has attempted to bifurcate the General and Professional Colleges in India by establishing universities for technical education, medical education and general subjects. This has made the administration of the Colleges in India more effective and efficient.

Polytechnic Colleges: The Polytechnic Colleges in India provide vocational training to students in a wide range of Professional courses like those related to Engineering, para-medical disciplines and other disciplines related to travel and tourism, hospitality, Home Science, Library Science and many others.

Admission Criteria to Colleges in India:

General colleges: Admission to the general Degree Colleges in India is based on the 10+2 / Higher Secondary / Pre-Degree examination or equivalent course conducted by a recognized Board or University.

Professional Colleges: Admission to the professional Colleges in India are based on two factors and they are:

  • Completion of the 10+2 / Higher Secondary / Pre-Degree examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and for Medicine, it should be with Biology.
  • A high score in the Joint Entrance Examinations of the State or the All India Examinations.

Polytechnics: The admission criteria for Polytechnics Colleges in India is a pass in the tenth standard examination and depending on the marks obtained in the Science subjects the admission is offered.
