There are several universities in India to meet the higher educational requirement of the growing number of students. Yet, there is a lot of requirement of universities to provide ample educational opportunities to the students. Thus, University Grants Commission, the authority that deals with the universities, has made the division of universities as
- Central universities
- State universities
- Deemed universities
- Institution of National Importance
- State private universities
State universities provide affiliation to the colleges of their region, prepare educational programs and their syllabus. Central universities do the same in broad.
Deemed university is the institution that offers higher education courses in particular department or departments, maintaining higher standards, and is declared as Deemed University by the Ministry of Human Resource Development as per the advice of University Grants Commission (UGC) that the institute can be ‘Deemed-to-be-University’, under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956. These institutes are permitted to enjoy full autonomy in various aspects like designing the programs and their syllabus, setting individual admission guidelines etc.
UGC was privileged Most of the deemed universities are permitted to award the degrees to the students in the name of their university and few do under the name of their parent universities, though they administer themselves.
Deemed university offers graduation, post graduation, and research programs. There are around 120 deemed universities, currently, in India. About 18 states out of 29 states of India contain deemed universities. Few of these universities got accreditation by National Assessment and Accreditation Council with grades. Better infrastructure, faculty, latest equipment, etc are found in these deemed universities.
Technology, Sanskrit, Agriculture, Foreign Trade, Legal, Management, Arts, Education Administration, Medical, Dairy, Yoga, Fisheries, Archeology, Chemical Engineering, Economics, etc are few of the specializations of these Deemed Universities. Several deemed universities come under general category offering different courses of different specializations.
The students from deemed universities have more importance while recruitment as these universities provides education in advanced methodologies. Yet, students must be careful while choosing the deemed universities as few of the fake universities name themselves as deemed-to-be-universities. The list of the universities can be found on the UGC website.
