Sociology deals with the observation and analysis of social behavior and group living. The basis and growth of a culture, social order or disorder etc are considered in the study using various methods. The term used to focus few of the society related issues like social mobility, sexuality etc but is now expanded to scientific knowledge that effect the society as well as the activities of society that are effecting scientific knowledge.

The person who studies sociology and research in the discipline is called Sociologist. These sociologists assist many people like politicians and business peoples in working with the social issues with the help of researching methodologies. This is so as there is relation between society and the business market.   • Post Graduate Diploma in Sociology: Graduation in any of the discipline from a recognized university
  • B.A. Sociology: Passing in 10+2 or equivalent
  • B.A. (Hons.) Sociology: Passing in 10+2 or equivalent
  • M.A. Sociology: Most of the colleges admit graduates from any discipline but few seek graduation from sociology itself
  • M.A. (Hons.) Sociology: Most of the colleges admit graduates from any discipline but few seek graduation from sociology itself
  • M.Phil. (Sociology): Master’s Degree in Sociology
  • M.Phil. (Development Sociology): Master’s Degree in Sociology
  • Ph.D. (sociology): Master’s Degree in Sociology

Few of the courses are also offered in distance mode also. The higher educational programs like M.Phil. and Ph.D. include entrance test for the admission.

Career aspect and the pay for Sociology Courses

The major career opportunities are found in educational institutes, counseling centers, social welfare organizations, public relation companies and civil services.

Teaching is one of the major options. The teachers are recruited for the subject Social Science. B.Ed. and passing in TET or CTET are the requirements for the School teacher. Post graduation as well as passing in the National Eligibility Test (NET) is the requirement for attaining lectureship. Passing in NET with good score also provides the chance to gain the Fellowship. Ph.D. holders are recruited as Associate Professors, Professors, Readers and Registrars. The opportunities are equally found in Government and Private institutes. The salary in the private field depends on the experience. The basic salary for a fresh graduate in private organizations is around Rs. 7000/-per month and above and the government job offers more than 10,000 per month including allowances. There is even a great scope in online teaching.

Preparing for civil services is the choice of many aspirants which allows playing major roles of the administration. UPSC is the commission which conducts the exam for the recruitment in All India, Central and State Services. Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and Indian Foreign Service (IFS) are few of the services that recruit through the commission.

Writing articles in magazines or news papers is another option. One can either be a freelancer or a permanent recruiter. A Diploma in Journalism is added advantage to be a journalist. The pay ranges from Rs. 5000/- per month.
