History Courses in India


Today is the history of tomorrow. Thus, history is a vast subject and always gets expanded. History involves the culture of a society, lifestyle of the mankind of certain age. It is history that teaches the past experiences to the present generations and helps to take preventions for the future generations.

The learners of the stream need the knowledge of other disciplines like geography, economics and anthropology for the better grip over the subject. The education boards realized the importance of teaching History and thus the subject is included in social science and is taught right from secondary school.

History Courses and the academic eligibility

  • Post Graduate Diploma in Indian History and Culture: Graduation degree in any discipline from a recognized university or equivalent
  • B.A. in History: Passing in 10 + 2
  • M.A. in History: either graduation in History or any other graduation from a recognized university.
  • M.Phil. in History: Post Graduation in History from a recognized university
  • Ph.D. in History: Post Graduation in History from a recognized university

Many universities offer the programs in distant mode also. Few of the graduation courses include entrance test for the admission and also for M.Phil. and Ph.D.

Career prospect in History Courses

There are several aspects of career with the stream. Teaching, archaeology, tourism are few of the fields that offer positions to the experts of the stream.

Teaching is one of the major options. The teachers are recruited for the subject Social Science. B.Ed. and passing in TET or CTET are the requirements for the School teacher. Post graduation as well as passing in the National Eligibility Test (NET) is the requirement for attaining lectureship. Passing in NET with good score also provides the chance to gain the Fellowship. Ph.D. holders are recruited as Associate Professors, Professors, Readers and Registrars.

Besides teaching one also can be a historian, the one who writes about history. These historians contribute works and get published. They also can be editors of the publications.

Archaeologists is another job role suited to history graduates. To be an archaeologist one must also possess a Post Graduate Diploma in Archaeology besides Master degree in History or Bachelor degree with the combination of History and Archaeology. One can find position as Archaeologist in The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in state or central level through the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) or through the State Public Service Commission (SPSC) examinations. The other option is to work in a museum as museum curator.

History graduates are also recruited as Records manager, archivist, librarian and information officer.

Tourist companies also prefer History graduates as they are better suited to explain the details of a place in the view of history. A diploma in tourism would help the history graduates to attain better opportunities in tourism field.

Payment / Salary for History Courses

The payment depends on the job position of the candidate. For the teachers, the minimum pay is Rs.8000 and above and for the lecturers 10,000 and above. The archaeologists are offered Rs.25,000/- and above for the experienced and skilled.

Thus, History offers a prospective and rewarding career that attracts many enthusiasts to enter the stream and choose it as career.
