What is NEED Entrance Exam?

NEED stands for National Entrance Exam for Design conducted by National Institute of Design (NID). It is the entrance exam for the Graduate Diploma Program in Design (GDPD) and Post Graduate Diploma Program in Design (PGDPD) in NID. The program GDPD consist 8 disciplines that the students are allotted with any one of them. The program is of 4 years and is conducted in Ahmedabad. The program PGDPD is conducted at Ahmedabad, Gadhinagar and Bengaluru, offering 17 disciplines.

Eligibility Criteria for NEED Entrance Exam

The eligibility requirements for NEED are the following For GDPD

  • Qualifying or appearing 10+2 examination or equivalent course
  • Age must be 20 yrs or below 20 yrs (For reserved seats the age must be 23 yrs or below 23 yrs) as on June 01

For PGDPD

  • The eligibility varies from discipline to discipline. Qualifying or appearing Graduation or equivalent is eligibility for most of the courses. Few of the courses like Product Design need Engineering or Technological courses as eligibility.
  • Age must be 30 yrs or below 30 yrs (For reserved seats the age must be 33 yrs or below 33 yrs)

The candidate those who fulfill academic eligibility but not the age can take Design Aptitude Test (DAT).

How to apply for NEED Entrance Exam

The application form is available in the online Application website. The information must be filled online and print the completed application form. It must be to the main office attached with required documents and Demand Draft drawn on any nationalized bank in favor of “National Institute of Design” payable at Ahmedabad. Candidates will receive the Hall ticket by post. The forms are also available at selected branches of Bank of India.

NEED Entrance Exam pattern

The exam for GDPD students consist written examination and studio test are the phases. The top 300 candidates who clear the first phase will be eligible for the studio test. Out of 300, only 100 students get selected for the admission. The allocation of discipline will be done in the second year where as the first year contain common syllabus.

The exam for PGDPD contains written examination, group discussion and personal interview. The top 735 candidates who clear the written examination will be eligible for the second phase i.e., for group discussion and personal interview. 245 candidates who show top performance in the second phase would be selected for the admission in any of the 17 disciplines.

The written examination aims to test the following skills of the candidates -sketching skills, observation skills, futuristic thinking and clarity of ideas.

How to prepare for the NEED Entrance Exam?

  • Improve the basic sketching skills, creativity, visualization and imagination skills
  • Learn the basics of designing and concept of presentation
  • Follow the old question papers. Many books are available with the solved old papers. Check your answers with the solutions of the books
  • Look the objects we use every day in new perspective and try to draw them in different ways
