IIM Education in India


What is IIM Education?

IIM stands for Indian Institute of Management. These are autonomous institutes and offers management courses. There are 14 working IIMs in India and are administrated by IIM Council. These colleges are spread over different areas of India covering most of the major cities – Ranchi, Raipur, Calcutta, Udaipur, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Indore, Shillong, Tiruchirapalli etc. Five more IITs are planned to establish.

What are the educational programs in IIM?

Management studies programs train and improve the skills of the student on certain areas of management that they would be prepared to organize the works in proper ways, manage and confront the difficult situations while managing the organization and indulge new strategies for the improvement of the organization. Those who are good with analytical and problem solving skills may choose the discipline to study.

IIMs are autonomous bodies and the designing of the programs varies from IIM to IIM. The major program in these institutes is Post Graduate Program in Management of two years which is equivalent to the regular MBA program. Few IIMs also offer Post Graduate Diploma Program of one year for the experienced graduates. The Fellow Program in Management which is equivalent to Ph.D. is offered by some of the IIMs. Few short term executive courses and part time programs are also offered by many of the IIMs that the students may get the knowledge of the course and earn simultaneously. Distance courses are also available in few IIMs for the working executives.

There are many other courses which are available with only few of the IIMs.

Many courses include theoretical and practical examinations as well as project work. This allows one to gather the comprehensive knowledge of the subject.

Why to choose IIM education?

There are several reasons to take up IIT education. Few of them are:

  • Students from IIM are recognized well and are offered top positions with high packages.
  • Reputed companies offer positions with campus selections. Thus, one can be a job holder as soon as stepping out of the college
  • These institutes are famed for the quality of education after IITs that it is a prestigious issue to the talented students to get an admission in these institutes.
  • Equal importance to the quality of education as well as cultural, social service and sports activities. These provide all round personality development to the students.
  • Organization of festivals enhances the organization, communication and management skills besides instilling team spirit.
  • These colleges stood in top ranks in countrywide.

When to plan the career?

Graduation is the minimum qualification for most of the programs. Score in CAT is the considered for the Post Graduate Program and for the students from abroad GMAT is the considered test for the same program. GMAT is also considered for the one year regular program which is for the experienced executives.

For Doctoral programs, which are available in few IIMs, the considering exam varies. Research Aptitude Test (RAT), CAT, GATE, GRE and GMAT are few of the tests. Interview scores, academic and professional achievements are considered for the admission. Few include group discussion.

What after the degree from IIM?

Proper management leads to the quick and constructive development of the organization. This is applicable to any kind of organization. Thus, many organizations prefer the candidates from Management Studies as they are trained with managerial skills. The programs aimed for the experienced executives help to get the better opportunities in the existing organization or in other organizations.

Managing the organization is the major role of the students of the stream. The fields that provide the opportunities to the students of Management Studies are:

Supply Chain Companies: For the management of supply chain companies and the analysis of the market, Managers and e-Commerce analyst are hired.

Marketing: Technical Marketing Manager, Marketing Executive and Marketing analyst are few of the major job roles.

Financial companies: Banks, insurance companies and other financial organizations are one of the leading recruiters.

IT Sector: Information Technology provides opportunities to the graduates. The higher education leads to the higher positions in management.

Human Resources: Human Resource Executive, Training Coordinator and Recruitment Consultant are the possible positions.

Factories and Industries: Usually engineering students with Management studies qualification are preferred in Factories and Industries as they could manage technical and non-technical issues of the organization.

Teaching field: The field allows one to be either in management or in teaching in educational institutes. Managing Principal and Non-academic In-charge are few of the opportunities. Corporate schools and chain schools are the major recruiters.

Post Graduation or equivalent and the passing score in National Eligibility Test (NET) are the required qualification for being a Lecturer or Assistant Professor. The higher degree Ph.D. enables one to be a professor. The opportunities are found in both government and private organizations. The salary in the private field depends on the experience. There is even a great scope in online teaching.
