Engineering Services Exam


Indian Engineering Services Examination is conducted by Union Public Services Commission (UPSC). The exam is one of the Government personnel recruiting examination. It is considered as one of the toughest examinations as the ratio of posts and competitors is high. The examination aims the middle management services in several Government Organizations.

Why to Take ESE Exam?

As mentioned above, middle management positions are recruited through the exams as per the discipline of the candidates. Civil Engineering candidates get opportunity in Central Public Works Department, Indian Railway Services of Engineers, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Military Engineering Services etc. Mechanical Engineering students get opportunity in Border Roads Organization, Central Electricity Authority, Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers etc. Electrical Engineering gets opportunity in Central Power Engineering Service, Indian Naval Armament Service, and Indian Supply Service. Electronics and Telecommunication students get opportunity in Indian Radio regulatory Service, Indian Supply service, Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Services etc.

Engineering Services Exam (ESE) Eligibility

A Bachelor Degree in Engineer or Master Degree in any of the subjects acceptable for the services, from any recognized University is the academic requirement of the Examination. Final Year students can also appear for the examination with a condition of submitting the proof of acquiring the degree in case of qualifying the written part of the examination.

The age must be between twenty one to thirty years and certain age relaxations are applicable to certain categories. Candidates are expected to be fit on medical grounds and in physical standards. There would be medical examination for all the written qualified candidates.

Engineering Services Exam (ESE) Structure

The exam includes objective and descriptive type papers. There are five paper tests and Personality test which are of 200 marks for each with the total of 1200 marks.

First Paper which is of Objective Type on General English and General Studies, Second and Third papers which are also objective are on the major disciplines of Engineering. Fourth and Fifth papers are descriptive on the major discipline of Engineering. Duration of Objective type papers is 2 hours and of Descriptive papers is 3 hours. The descriptive answer sheets are evaluated only when the candidate qualifies in the objective type papers.

How to Apply Engineering Services Exam (ESE)?

The applications must be submitted through official online website. Candidate has to choose Centre and the discipline of Engineering which can’t be changed. Candidate must be ready with scanned passport sized photograph, scanned signature and valid email ID before filling the online application.

Fee relaxation is applicable to female and reserved category candidates. The eligible candidates get the e-Admission card, which is to be downloaded and printed, three weeks before the examination date. Candidates need to be ready with certificates of age and educational qualifications and others to submit after qualifying the written exam.

How to Prepare Engineering Services Exam (ESE)

  • Learning a new word per day, grammar exercises etc also help in better score of General English.
  • Reading English news paper helps to enrich the vocabulary as well as improves the knowledge of general studies.
  • Leave no topic of subjects. Cover every part of the chosen subject.
  • Regular preparation has to be started as early as possible.
  • Previous year question papers and mock tests help to understand the questioning pattern and time management.
