About NIFT Entrance Exam

The National Institute of Fashion Technology or NIFT, is an educational institution set up to fulfill the learning requirements of those aspiring to be fashion technologists, fashion designers and other professionals in the fashion world. Set up by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India in 1986, the National Institute of Fashion Technology is a premium institution in India, where a candidate can acquire both the Bachelors and the Master’s Degree in Fashion Technology. Admission for candidates is based on an entrance examination conducted by the institute.

NIFT Entrance Exam Syllabus

The entrance test is conducted on the syllabus set by the NIFT, and is conducted in two phases. One is CAT or the Creative Ability Test, and the other is GAT or the General Ability Test. The first is a paper based test and the second is either a paper based or a computer based test.

How to apply for NIFT Entrance Exam

To apply to the various Bachelors and Master’s degree programs at NIFT, the candidate needs to download the application form from the website of the National Institute of Fashion Technology Candidates wanting to know the procedures on how to apply for the entrance exam can go through the guidelines given in the website and follow them accurately. Fees for the application form needs to be paid online or through a bank draft drawn in favor of “NIFT HO” which is payable at New Delhi. The fee for the application form is Rs.1200/- (General) and Rs.600/- (SC/ST) and all the required documents. The NIFT Prospectus can be bought at any of the NIFT campuses spread across the country for Rs.500/-

NIFT Entrance Exam Pattern

A written examination is conducted which the candidate has to appear for and must do so at the examination center, which the candidate has opted for in the application form. The exam pattern consists of two written examinations. One is the Creative Ability Test and the other is General Ability Test.

The former, is a test of the innovation, designing skills, use of colors and patterning while the latter tests the knowledge and learning of the candidate. Each question carries one mark which is awarded for every right answer. There is not negative marking. Questions in the entrance exam for admission to NIFT include English Reading Comprehension, Analytical Ability, General Knowledge and Current Affairs which consist of 30 questions each. The other two papers, Quantitative Ability and Communication Ability, consists 35 questions each. Candidates shortlisted in the written are further called in for a personal interview, group discussion and verification of documents. Admission is guaranteed only after all these requirements are satisfied. 30% of the CAT examination, 30% of the GAT examination and 40% of personal interview and group discussion is awarded to the students based on which admission is decided.

How to prepare for NIFT Entrance Exam

Each and every aspect of the test should be well practiced and honed before attempting the NIFT entrance exam. Practicing a good volume of previous year’s examination papers and solving them will give the candidate a good idea of the paper pattern, and also of the questions that are likely to be asked for the examination.
