Meghalaya is one of the Seven Sister States of north-east India. It is mountainous, the most rain soaked state of India. Shillong is the capital of the state. It is considered as the educational hub for the students from the neighbouring states and overseas.
History of Education in Meghalaya
It was when the the Welsh missionary Thomas Jones proposed Khasi Alphabet in 1842 regular education in Meghalaya began. American missionaries developed the Garo Alphabet in 1902 for the Garo hill areas. The natives of the colonies were not necessarily well educated and so only a few primary schools were there. In 1924, the Christian Brothers of Ireland established the first college in Shillong. Over the years, several colleges and schools were established.
