Income Tax or Excise Inspector Examination


Income Tax or Excise Inspector Examination is conducted by Staff Selection Commission. The examination is conducted once a year, usually during April and the notification is published usually during the month of November of before year. The examination is held All India Level. Thus the competition lies in high ratio.

Why to Take the Income Tax or Excise Inspector Exam?

The exam is conducted for the recruitment of the following positions.

  • Inspector of Central Excise in different Collectorates of Central Excise.
  • Examinar (Ordinary Grade) in Custom House at Cheenia, Kolkata, Mumbai, Vishakhapatnam and Goa.
  • Preventive Officer (Ordinary Grade) in Custom Houses at Cochin, Chennai, Vishakhapatnam, Mumbai, Kolkata and Goa.
  • Inspector of Income Tax in different charges of the Commissioner of Income Tax
  • Assistant Enforcement Officers in the Directorate of Enforcement (FERA)

All of the posts are paid decent pay that includes Basic Pay, Grade Pay, Dearness Allowance, Travelling Allowance, Housing Allowance etc.

Income Tax or Excise Inspector Exam Eligibility

Academic Eligibility is holding Graduation Degree in any of the disciplines or its equivalent from a recognized University. Candidates of final year of Degree are also eligible for the exam. Minimum age limit is 18 and maximum age limit is 25. The upper age limit is relaxed to few of the categories.

The candidates must meet the physical standards mentioned. Physical Standards for the male are – Height must be minimum 157 cm, Chest must be minimum 80 cm as normal and 85 cm when expanded. For Female Candidates – Height must be minimum 152 cm and weight must be minimum 48kgs. These Physical Standards are relaxed for Scheduled Tribes and for the candidates from few of the States.

Income Tax or Excise Inspector Exam Pattern

Selection procedure includes - Written test, Physical Endurance Test of Walking and Cycling and Personality Test/Interview.

Written Test contain four parts – General Intelligence for 120 marks, General English for 80 marks, Arithmetical Ability for 80 marks and General Awareness for 120 marks. Total marks are for 400. The exam is Objective Type. The duration of the exam is 2 hours.

Candidates have to qualify each of the sections separately to get qualified for the next round.

Physical test of walking and cycling varies from male and female candidates. Men are test with 1600 metres walking in 15 minutes and 8 km cycling in 30 minutes whereas female need to complete 1km walking in 20 minutes and 3 km cycling in 20 minutes.

How to Apply for Income Tax or Excise Inspector Exam?

The notification is found in Employment News/Rozgar Samachar. The candidates must check the eligibility criteria. The application must be completed as per the mentioned format on a plain paper. The application can be handwritten or typed. The duly filled application must be sent to the Zonal Recruitment Offices within the date.

How to Prepare for Income Tax or Excise Inspector?

As the exam covers the subjects of class 10, referring the text books would help a lot for better basement of subjects. Earliest preparation is suggested as the syllabus needs thorough preparation. Several institutions are providing coaching and many publications are providing exam material for the preparation.

Reading news paper would improve the knowledge of English as well as the knowledge of current affairs. Old papers, mock tests and practice papers would play key role in the improvement of time management which is rather necessary during the examination.
