Education in Dadra and Nagar Haveli – An Introduction

Dadra and Nagar Haveli is a union territory. Nagar Haveli is located on the west coast between Maharastra and Gujarat while Dadra is a landlocked by Gujarat with Silvassa as its common capital. The state is an industrial hub as it provides many tax incentives to industries and establishments and due to this reason has a sizable revenue base. The population of Dadra and Nagar Haveli is 3.44 Lakhs with a male population of 56.10 % and female population of 43.9%. The literacy rate of the state is 76.24% of which the male literacy is 85.17% and the female literacy is 47.67%. The sex ratio of the state is 774 for every 1000 males which is much below the national average of 940. The major spoken languages in this union territory are Hindi, Gujarati and Marathi.

As per the ASER report data available for 2012 for Dadra and Nagar Haveli there has been a marked improvement in the education scenario. The enrolment in school picks up from the age of 4 years and shows signs of tapering off once the child attains the age of 16 years which enables them to seek employment and support a livelihood. The enrolment ratio is at its maximum peak during the age bracket of 6 to 14 years, which is primarily due to the universalization of education. There are over 300 schools in Dadar and Nagar Haveli which are affiliated to CBSE and ICSE boards besides Gujarat State Education Board. Schools in Dadra and Nagar Haveli are distributed evenly which enables the majority tribal population to avail educational facilities.

The previous progress of the higher education sector has been very dismal. To boost the higher education system in the union territory and to reduce the traffic of educational migration, the government of late has initiated a number of steps by setting up colleges and allowing the private sector to set up institutions of repute for the welfare of its citizens. This has enabled setting up of government colleges and institutions imparting education in management, technology, engineering, teachers training, pharmacy, rural development and a host of other disciplines for the benefit of the students. Financial incentives and benefit to institutions by the government has also contributed to their growth in the union territory. The colleges are mainly affiliated to the University of Pune and the technical institutions to the AICTE. The polytechnics and technical institutions have enjoyed special advantages in the training and employment of their students due to the presence of numerous industries in the area due to liberal fiscal benefits provided to them by the government to boost industrialisation.

The union territory has a very bright future for higher education and employment of technocrats indeed as it is strategically located between the two rapidly economically developing states of Gujarat and Maharashtra and is also a major attraction for upcoming industries due to tax incentives prevailing till 2019 and its proximity to major markets of Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Further the Delhi – Mumbai industrial corridor will also go a great way in helping it to shape its economic standing in the national perspective.
