The course is a four years program divided into 8 semesters. The course comprises the topics like aquaculture, taxonomy of fishes, Meteorology, Biochemistry, Geography, Microbiology, Fishery Economics, Anatomy of fishes, Oceanography, Marine Biology, Aquaculture Engineering, Hatchery Management, Ecology, and Genetics etc, as subjects of the course. Most of the institutes include hands-on and in-plant training in fisheries.

B.F.S. (Bachelor of Fisheries Science) Eligibility

Clearing 10 + 2 with optional subjects Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry from a recognized board or its equivalent is the basic educational eligibility for the course. ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) is the all India level common entrance test to pursue a graduation in fisheries from the institutions of India. The minimum age limit is 17 years and maximum age limit is 20 years.
