What is IIT Education?
IIT stands for Indian Institute of Technology. These are autonomous institutes and offers engineering as well as management course. There are 16 working IITs in India and are administrated by IIT Council. These colleges are spread over different areas of India covering most of the major cities - New Delhi, Gandhinagar, Chennai, Mumbai, Guwahati, Kharagpur, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Roorkee, Patna, Kanpur, Varanasi etc. Five more IITs are planned to establish.
What are the educational programs in IIT?
Post Graduate Diploma, Bachelor and Master’s degree are the available educational programs.
The Engineering stream offers several branches of studies that one can make a prospective path in the interested area. Mechanical, Chemical, Instrumentation, Production, Design, Computer, Aeronautical are few of the branches of engineering courses. Many courses include theoretical and practical examinations as well as project work. This allows one to gather the comprehensive knowledge of the subject. The Master’s programs are offered by only few of the IITs.

When to plan the career?
The eligibility criterion to a Bachelor degree in engineering is passing in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. IIT take admissions through Joint Entrance Exam (JEE). JEE is conducted in two levels. Those who clear main level with high score are eligible for the Advanced level. The percentage in 10+2 is also considered during the admission.
Hence, one can start planning for the career after class 10 or class 12. Yet, there is even opportunity to the students to jump into technology programs at Master’s degree level. The students holding Master’s degree in Science or Mathematics or Statistics or Computers are also eligible for the Master program in technology. GATE is the examination conducted for the admission in Master of Technology in IITs.
For the management programs, Common Admission Test (CAT) score is considered for the admission. Joint Admission Test to MSc. (JAM) is examination for the admission of Master’s program in Science.
What after the degree from IIT?
The area of the opportunities is found in good number for the IIT students. The job role usually depends on the branch of the degree.
For Engineering and Science students, machinery production companies like automobile and auto part production, Defense Industry, Shipping industry, Rail Industry, Aviation related companies, Technology Centers, State Control Boards are the major recruiters.
The roles are also found in Government bodies like Indian Navy, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL), National Aeronautical Lab (NAL), Civil Aviation Department, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Defence Research and Development Laboratories (DRDL), BHEL, HIL, BCPL, CBEC, ILBS, CRWC etc.
Management roles in these industries are offered to or prefer those who possess management related degree like MBA besides engineering.
Teaching is also a best choice. Score in CSIR National Eligibility Test (NET) is a compulsion to settle as a Lecturer or Professor in colleges and Universities. The researcher in the field also opt the exam for the fellowship.
For management students, supply chain companies, marketing, financial companies, IT sector, Human Resourcing companies, Factories and Industries, Teaching institutes are the major recruiters.
