Being the official language of Assam, Assamese is spoken by around 20 million speakers which include native and non-native speakers. Apart from Assam, the language is also spoken in few areas in Arunachal Pradesh and other north-east states of India. It is also native to few of the people in the neighboring countries like Bhutan and Bangladesh.

Certificate course: Passing in Secondary School Certificate Examination i.e., class 10 or equivalent.

Graduation course: Passing in 10 + 2 with the language as 1st or 2nd language
Post Graduation Course: Graduation in the language or any other graduation degree from a recognized university with the language as one of the papers.
M.phil.: Post Graduation in the language

The admission process of the courses ‘M.phil.’ and ‘Ph.D.’ include entrance test. Few colleges consider the entrance test for Graduation and Post Graduation also.

Teacher/Lecturer/Professor: The graduation in the language or equivalent with Bachelor degree in education (B.Ed.) enables one to become a teacher. Post Graduation with the passing out in National Eligibility Test (NET) is the required qualification for being a Lecturer and Assistant Professor. The higher degree Ph.D. enables one to be a professor. The opportunities are found in both government and private organizations. The salary in the private field depends on the experience. The basic salary for a fresh graduate in private organizations is around Rs. 7000/-per month and above and the government job offers more than 10,000 per month including allowances. There is even a great scope in online teaching.
Poet/Story or Novel Writer/Article Writer: Many people those who are confident of their language skills choose these kinds of job roles. They work either as freelancer/individual worker or under any reputed writer/ newspapers and magazines. Many like to take three of the job roles to be a versatile writer. One can expect around Rs.5000/- and above per month. In film and television industry one can be script writer or story writer or lyricist as per their talent. The payment is not constrained for the talented in these industries.
Journalist/Editor: These job roles require a certificate or a course in the journalism or equivalent besides the degree in the language. The job roles are found in mass media like news papers, t.v. channels. The pay for the fresher ranges around Rs. 6000/- and above per month.
Translator/content writers: Many servicing companies are recruiting the language experts for the works like translating, content writing etc. The online servicing companies are taking a lion’s share in providing the opportunities in the sector. The pay ranges around Rs.6000/- and above per month.
